Applied Physics Jobs in Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand at Alignerr

Title: Applied Physics

Company: Alignerr

Location: Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand

Applied Physics — AI Data Trainer

About The Role

What if your deep expertise in quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, and thermodynamics could directly shape how AI understands the physical world? We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to stress-test cutting-edge AI models — exposing the gaps in their physical reasoning and helping ensure they respect the fundamental laws of the universe.

This is a fully remote, flexible contract role built for researchers and academics who want high-impact work on their own schedule. No prior AI experience required — your physics expertise is what matters.

  • Organization: Alignerr
  • Type: Hourly Contract
  • Location: Remote
  • Commitment: 10–40 hours/week

What You'll Do

  • Design Advanced Physics Problems — Craft complex, open-ended problems at PhD qualifying exam level, requiring multi-step reasoning and rigorous mathematical derivation across topics like quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, classical mechanics, and thermodynamics
  • Author Gold-Standard Solutions — Write meticulous, step-by-step solutions that serve as ground-truth benchmarks, with flawless handling of physical constants, units, and logical proof structure
  • Audit AI Reasoning — Evaluate AI-generated simulations, derivations, and proofs for physical consistency; identify precisely where models "hallucinate" physics that violates first principles
  • Refine Model Behavior — Provide structured, expert feedback to improve AI reasoning around constraints such as conservation laws, boundary conditions, and symmetry principles

Who You Are

  • Hold a PhD (completed or in final stages) in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field
  • Deep mastery across the core pillars: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics
  • Exceptional ability to communicate complex physical phenomena and mathematical derivations in clear, structured English
  • Uncompromising attention to detail — units, scientific notation, and proof logic are second nature to you
  • Self-motivated and reliable when working independently
  • No prior AI or machine learning experience required

Nice to Have

  • Experience with data annotation, scientific dataset evaluation, or quality assurance for research outputs
  • Proficiency with computational tools such as MATLAB, COMSOL, Python (NumPy/SciPy), or similar
  • Background in research publishing, technical writing, or academic instruction

Why Join Us

  • Work on frontier AI projects alongside world-leading research labs
  • Fully remote and async — work when and where it suits you
  • Freelance autonomy with the structure of meaningful, well-defined tasks
  • Apply your research expertise to one of the most consequential technology challenges of our time
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
