Role Overview Art Director – AI-Focused leads visual direction across the agency's portfolio with AI-native production at the core. Owns design quality, brand visual systems, and creative output across paid, social, brand, and content work. Player-coach role — sets visual direction, ships high-stakes work personally, builds AI-augmented production pipelines, and uplifts the design team's craft and speed.

Key Responsibilities

1. Visual Direction & Quality Governance

  • Final reviewer on all client-facing design — ads, landing pages, social, decks, brand work, video
  • Maintain visual consistency, brand fidelity, and craft standards across designers and accounts
  • Enforce QC: typography, composition, color discipline, brand guideline adherence

2. AI-Native Production Pipeline

  • Build and own the agency's AI creative stack — image, video, motion, upscale, edit, composite
  • Stand up production workflows using Midjourney, Firefly, Runway, Sora, Kling, Veo, ComfyUI, Stable Diffusion, Magnific, Topaz, Krea
  • Develop prompt libraries, style references, brand-locked LoRAs / style models per client
  • Establish IP-safe AI usage — licensing, training data, client disclosure, brand safety
  • Distinguish AI-generated vs. AI-augmented vs. human work; protect craft where it matters

3. Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead a team of 4–8 designers, motion designers, and visual artists
  • Run 1:1s, performance reviews, portfolio reviews
  • Identify skill gaps; design AI-upskilling plans across the team
  • Build hiring bar for AI-fluent designers; design portfolio review criteria

4. Creative Strategy & Concepting

  • Translate briefs into visual concepts, mood boards, and design systems
  • Partner with copy and strategy on integrated campaign creative
  • Develop brand visual identities for new clients

5. Performance Marketing Creative

  • Lead creative for Google Ads, Meta Ads, YouTube — static, motion, video
  • Drive volume + variant testing using AI for hypothesis-led iteration
  • Read performance data; iterate creative based on CTR, CVR, engagement, hook rate

6. Brand & Social Design

  • Own brand visual systems — guidelines, templates, asset libraries
  • Lead social design direction across Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, X
  • Maintain visual coherence across long-running accounts

7. Motion & Video

  • Direct short-form video, motion graphics, and AI-generated video work
  • Oversee Runway / Sora / Kling production for ads, social, brand films
  • Bridge between traditional motion (After Effects, Premiere) and generative video

8. Client Communication

  • Present visual work and rationale to clients
  • Defend creative direction with strategic and performance reasoning
  • Manage feedback loops, rework rounds, approval workflows

9. Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work daily with copy, performance, account management, dev
  • Align on briefs, timelines, asset specs
  • Represent design in capacity and project planning

10. Process & Standards

  • Define SOPs — briefs, templates, asset naming, review checklists, AI prompts
  • Standardize design delivery across accounts to enable scale
  • Drive intake quality so designers get usable briefs

Required Skills & Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Design, Visual Communication, Fine Arts, or related field
  • Strong portfolio mandatory — traditional + AI-augmented work both required

Experience

  • 6–9 years in design / art direction across performance, brand, content, social
  • Minimum 2 years leading designers
  • Agency experience strongly preferred
  • Demonstrable AI-creative work shipped to clients

Craft – Traditional

  • Mandatory: Figma, Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere)
  • Strong typography, layout, composition, color theory
  • Brand identity systems and design system thinking

Craft – AI

  • Mandatory daily use: Midjourney, Firefly, Runway, Sora / Veo / Kling
  • Strong: ComfyUI or Stable Diffusion workflows, LoRA training, upscaling (Magnific, Topaz)
  • Working knowledge: Krea, Ideogram, Flux, ElevenLabs (for AV work)
  • Ability to lock brand style — not generic AI aesthetic
  • Prompt engineering for art direction, not just keyword stacking

Performance Awareness

  • Working knowledge of Google Ads + Meta Ads creative specs and formats
  • Comfort with GA4 / Looker Studio for reading creative performance
  • Understand hook rate, thumbstop, CTR drivers in static and video

Soft Skills

  • Strong creative point of view; defends work without ego
  • Coaching instinct — develops designers, not just reviews work
  • Reads briefs critically; pushes back on weak inputs
  • Comfortable shipping fast without compromising craft
  • Curious about new tools — tests, adopts, discards on merit

Portfolio Expectations (For Hiring)

  • 8–12 samples across at least 4 formats (static ads, motion, brand, social, video)
  • Minimum 2 examples of AI-augmented or AI-generated production work with process notes
  • 1–2 examples of campaign-level art direction, not just standalone executions
  • Performance results where measurable

Success in 90 Days

  • Full ownership of design QC across the portfolio with no quality regressions
  • AI production pipeline documented and operational across the team
  • Brand visual guides for top 5 accounts captured as locked AI style references
  • 2+ designers visibly stronger on AI-augmented craft and turnaround
  • 1 campaign shipped with measurable lift driven by AI-enabled creative volume
