Job Overview
Marketplace, Canada’s award‑winning investigative consumer program is looking for the next great associate producer to join our team of experienced journalists and innovative storytellers.
If you’ve got the ability to find stories beyond the headlines, juggle multiple projects in a deadline‑driven environment, an obsession with getting the facts right, and a passion to dig deeper into the biggest consumer stories of our times, then this job is made for you.
You take initiative, move stories forward with a strong investigative sense, work independently while being a team player, and step in to assist colleagues proactively. Field research is often required and you’re ready for the challenge.
As an associate producer you will work within story teams alongside a host and story producer under the direction of the Executive Producer and Senior Producer. Your communication skills are key to connecting with people central to investigative journalism.
Your keen attention to detail ensures thorough notes that keep investigations organized. Familiarity with the legal system, corporate world, and government bureaucracy allows you to navigate obstacles. A strong understanding of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices is required, and all work will adhere to these standards.
Key Tasks
- Consistently pitch original ideas for program content in line with the program’s mandate and objectives.
- Act as an expert fact‑checker who ensures accuracy with all versions of the story.
- Assist in developing program content including writing, researching, and/or editing.
- Organize the participation of interviewees, creative contributors, and other participants.
- Develop background, introductions, and lines of questioning; conduct investigative research and brief all team members.
- Find experts with diverse backgrounds and opinions and pre‑interview them.
- Maintain and update research reports and contact files.
- Participate in all aspects of production, including conducting hidden camera shoots and appearing on camera for production shoots as required.
- Field‑produce program elements.
- Edit, encode, digitize, and package audio and video material for digital platforms using appropriate technologies.
- Maintain communication and rapport with members of the audience in a style appropriate to the program.
- Perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the program.
- Conduct field research, including location scouts, and organize logistics for local, national, and international travel for production as required.
Candidate Profile
- A minimum of two years of experience in investigative journalism, preferably with a consumer focus.
- Proven ability in the field and knowledge of the broadcasting industry.
- Understanding of consumer journalism and the tools required to achieve it.
- Experience filing FOI requests.
- Familiarity with product testing.
- Solid journalistic skills and demonstrated understanding of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices, especially regarding responsible communication, misrepresentation, and hidden cameras and microphones.
- Ability to work with experienced producers and hosts to develop and produce high‑impact current‑affairs programming under tight deadlines.
- Critical thinking ability applied to consumer reporting.
- Capacity to manage multiple simultaneous activities and prioritize and plan.
- Analytical skills for complex journalistic issues.
- Decision‑making under pressure.
- Productive teamwork with hosts, producers, and all members of the Marketplace team.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills.
- Clear and concise verbal and written communication.
- Creativity and love of the craft of video journalism.

- Availability for flexible shift work, including evenings and weekend duties.
