The built environment programme works to accelerate the transition to thermally comfortable, affordable, and low-carbon residential buildings. The work combines applied research, pilot demonstrations, and programme implementation to generate actionable evidence for policy and market transformation.
Position Overview
RMI India Foundation is seeking an Associate/Senior Associate to support our work in transforming India’s building sector. This role will focus on accelerating the deployment of thermally comfortable, affordable, net zero-carbon residential buildings in India. This entails the whole system of solutions—urban heat, embodied carbon, passive design, super-efficient equipment, renewable energy, and grid integration supported with cross-cutting levers around business models, behaviour change and skill enhancement.
As an Associate/Senior Associate, you will be an independent contributor and work closely with colleagues on projects under the direction of more senior staff to craft practical solutions for various identified problems. As an Associate/Senior Associates, you will contribute quantitative, technical, and field-based inputs to support high-quality research and implementation. You will work independently on defined tasks while collaborating closely with senior staff and cross-functional teams to deliver practical, policy and market based relevant insights.
Core Responsibilities
· Provide quantitative analysis, modelling, and support to our projects.
· Locate and manage high-quality data that sheds new light on problems and solutions.
· Support/lead review of policies, schemes, and initiatives around the identified sector, synthesising recommendations into clear and compelling presentations and written publications, including but not limited to reports.
· Support/lead the development of business models for creating and sustaining a market for new innovative technologies and solutions.
· Support/lead the development of concept notes and proposals.
· Design and create approaches and quantitative models to effectively address critical questions and challenges posed by our research goals and clients.
· Lead the preparation of presentations, briefs, and written outputs including reports and insight notes.
· Engage with external experts, consultants, and partners as required.
· Support/lead various webinars, events on the identified problems.
Required Qualifications
· Undergraduate degree in engineering, architecture, urban planning, environmental science, building science, or a related discipline.
· Master’s degree in a relevant field with a focus on energy, buildings science, is strongly preferred.
· Knowledge of one or more of the following areas: thermal comfort and heat stress, urban and passive cooling, building materials, energy efficiency
· Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
· Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
· Curiosity, humility, and motivation to contribute to India’s low-carbon and heat-resilient development.
Preferred Qualifications
· 3–5 years of experience for Associate-level roles and 5–8 years for Senior Associate roles in the built environment sector, with a preference for expertise in Building Materials (Cement, Concrete and Steel), Cooling, and Energy Efficiency.
· Experience with multi-stakeholder engagements or meeting facilitation.
· Strong quantitative skills and experience; ability to design, create, and run complex models (e.g., Python, R, PLEXOS).
· Experience in publishing quality reports with Government/Industry focused on policy implementation and market creation for the scaling up of new technologies/solutions.
· Prior experience with government technical assistance projects focused on pilot project implementation.
