Role Overview: We are seeking a dynamic and hands-on Director of Building Energy Efficiency Engineering. In this pivotal role, you will design, develop, and implement IoT-enabled energy-efficient solutions tailored for commercial environments. Your expertise in building technologies—particularly HVAC, lighting, and refrigeration—combined with proficiency in cloud and edge-based IoT energy and building management systems (EMS and BMS), will be essential. Additionally, knowledge of commercial renewable energy applications, such as solar and energy storage, is crucial. You will oversee the entire energy efficiency solution lifecycle, from identifying significant savings opportunities to specifying IoT platforms, configuring networks, and detailing device integrations. Collaborating with various implementation partners, including electrical, IoT, HVAC, and EPC specialists, you will ensure the successful deployment of these solutions. Initially an individual contributor, this role offers the opportunity to build and lead a specialized energy engineering team over the next two years, coordinating projects and serving as a subject matter expert in energy efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Energy Efficiency Identification: Pinpoint and implement measures such as load optimization, peak shaving, lighting enhancements, and HVAC system improvements, primarily leveraging IoT applications.
  • EMS/BMS Partnership Management: Serve as the primary liaison with our IoT-based EMS/BMS technology partners, overseeing the design, configuration, installation, deployment, and operation of EMS platforms for clients.
  • Solution Design and Deployment: Craft comprehensive solutions, manage project timelines, and configure our key partner IoT-based EMS platforms to meet client needs.
  • Proposal Development: Create detailed proposals and deployment plans for energy efficiency projects, including cost estimates and projected energy savings.
  • Project Management: Oversee project proposals and maintain client interactions throughout sales, solution development, and implementation phases; coordinate with subcontractors, supervise installations, and ensure quality control.
  • Site Assessments: Conduct on-site evaluations to analyze energy usage and identify improvement opportunities, collaborating with partners in HVAC, lighting, and other building domains.
  • Technical Support and Training: Provide clients and stakeholders with technical assistance, including system operation and maintenance training.
  • Industry Awareness: Stay informed about the latest advancements in building energy efficiency technologies and industry trends.
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Act as a subject matter expert in energy efficiency, demand-side management, and distributed generation.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with internal teams to enhance the utilization of technology and analytical tools.
  • Client Engagement: Visit potential client sites to conduct energy audits and facilitate the transition from evaluation to commissioning.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Building Engineering, Renewable Energy, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in facilities engineering, focusing on commercial/industrial HVAC, controls, electrical systems, and distributed generation.
  • At least 5 years of management experience.
  • Over 3 years of experience in designing and implementing IoT-based building energy efficiency systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of EMS/BMS and IoT systems in the commercial and industrial sectors, with familiarity with platforms such as Kode Labs, Gridpoint, Nantum, Verdigris, Honeywell Forge, Johnson OpenBlue, and Siemens Building X.
  • Comprehensive understanding of major BMS systems, including Niagara Tridium, Schneider, Honeywell, and Siemens.
  • Strong expertise in HVAC, lighting, energy storage, solar energy, and energy efficiency methodologies.
  • Proficiency in commercial building IoT applications, data modeling, and asset configurations related to HVAC, lighting, storage, and other building technologies.
  • Experience with demand response and other grid reliability programs.
  • Proven project management skills and experience collaborating with subcontractors.
  • Ability to develop and assess technical proposals and project plans.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Capability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Professional certifications in energy efficiency, solar, or storage are advantageous; a PE license or CEM certification is preferred.
