The mandate
A Melbourne business that sits behind some of Australia's most iconic large-scale events is undergoing an ambitious technology transformation; and is now hiring a CTO to lead it.
This is leadership role with full authority over both software/development and infrastructure teams. You'll inherit a growing engineering group (10 – 15 people, with managers underneath you) and a clear mandate: modernise the platform, define how software gets delivered in an AI-first world, and build a team that ships.
This is not an ivory-tower role. People leadership matters enormously here – but so does staying technical and hands-on. We're looking for a leader who's still close to the craft, forward-thinking, and genuinely fluent in modern AI tools and workflows (Claude / Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor and agentic development are part of how this team already works).
What you'll own
- Technical and people leadership across software and infrastructure
- The modernisation roadmap – micro-frontends, modern .NET APIs, event-driven services on Azure, AI-assisted delivery from prototype to production
- Defining new ways of working as AI reshapes the traditional SDLC
- Building, mentoring and structuring your own team as the function grows
What we're looking for
- A seasoned technology leader already operating at CTO / senior leadership level
- Strong people-management instincts; someone who builds culture and retains talent, not someone who rules from a distance
- Deep, current technical credibility (you can still get hands-on and lead from the front)
- Fluency in AI-assisted engineering, treating AI as a skills multiplier, not a threat
- A modern stack background: .NET, Angular/React, Azure, event-driven architecture
