MAKING AN IMPACT
As a member of the Strategic Communications team at the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS), the Communications Coordinator is CCS’s initial point of contact for all national media inquiries, working directly with media, key stakeholders and the general public. Reporting to the Communications Manager, the role provides communications support for CCS’s mission work, specifically advocacy and cancer information and support services. This includes but is not limited to proactive and reactive media relations, tracking and evaluating media metrics, project management and coordination, and writing and content development.

This role is ideal for a results-driven communicator with strong attention to detail, who has an understanding of the Canadian media landscape and communications fundamentals.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

  • Media Relations
  • Act as first point of contact on behalf of CCS for all nationwide media and manage media requests with the oversight of the Communications Manager.
  • Work with Communications Manager to respond to public inquiries in a timely and professional manner, collaborating with internal experts and stakeholders for information and fact-checking.
  • Prepare internal and external subject matter experts for media interviews and facilitate media training.
  • Maintain good relationships with identified key media stakeholders.
  • Monitor media for CCS mentions and proactively identify emerging issues or opportunities.
  • Analyze media coverage and develop specialized media reports to demonstrate effectiveness of communications about CCS initiatives.
  • Content Development and Vendor Management
  • Act as primary contact for media vendors & overseeing all vendor invoices for the Communications team.
  • Project manage content approvals and sharing between internal and external stakeholders in a timely, collaborative and professional manner.
  • Support in the execution of engaging mission communications materials such as news releases, key messages, fact sheets, speeches, presentations, digital content and more, ensuring all tools reflect the standard for high impact, high quality and on-brand communications.
  • Communications Support
  • Support in the execution of media relations and PR plans as required.
  • Post content to  or the newswire service as required.
  • Provide ad-hoc support to the Strategic Communications team.
  • Oversee distribution of CCS Daily Round-up and partnership media scans.
  • Source news content for internal and external CCS newsletters.
  • Work with the Advocacy team to produce, review and post content for the Canadian Cancer Society’s advocacy Blue Sky and X accounts.

  • QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in communications, public relations, journalism or related field
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in media relations or communications, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in deploying communications and public relations strategies and tactics, including working with media
  • Experience with media monitoring (Meltwater and Cision), reporting and analysis
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams…
