Position Summary
The Costume Stock Coordinator and Wardrobe Supervisor is a part‑time position within the Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS). The role primarily focuses on the maintenance, organization, storage, and preservation of the department’s costume collection, as well as managing stage wardrobe and dressing processes for all TDPS productions.
Responsibilities Costume Stock Curation (45%)
- Maintain, organize, and store the costume collection, including inventory listings and labeling of individual items.
- Receive, launder, list, label, integrate into the collection, and add to the database.
- Maintain rental/loan records, pull items, handle returns, and make delinquent return calls as necessary.
- Recommend equipment expenditures for the costume stock.
- Supervise and instruct approximately 4‑5 work‑study and 25‑35 registered students per semester in laboratory courses (THR 60, 174, 176, 179), training in curation procedures and safe working practices.
- Facilitate designers’ use of the collection, counsel and advise designers, and manage laundry/dry cleaning and repair of returned items.
Wardrobe Oversight (50%)
- Create and maintain wardrobe run sheets and related paperwork necessary to operate dresser tracks and preserve the original costume design.
- Include presets, timing for costume changes, quick changes, actor hand‑offs, and maintenance needs in paperwork.
- Attend production meetings, rehearsals, and designer runs to support wardrobe needs and may attend performances if required.
- Manage dressing room assignments, inventory of hair and makeup supplies, dry cleaning schedules, and strike plans for student show crews in collaboration with the Costume Director.
- Instruct, train, and lead students in Theater 167 as wardrobe technicians on run crew, covering maintenance and repair of costumes, as well as professional conduct standards.
- Supervise student wardrobe technicians in maintenance of wigs, hair, and makeup during technical rehearsals and performances.
Costume Shop Assistance (5%)
- Assist with building and assembling costumes and costume properties (shoes, masks, hats, armor, hair, wigs, makeup) under the supervision of the Costume Shop Director.
- Fit, cut, and finish garments from patterns, working from designs, sketches, or specified research.
- Construct costumes and costume properties from cloth, metal, plastic, leather, fiberglass, etc.
- Maintain the costume shop and related facilities in a neat, orderly, and safe condition, participating in daily clean‑up.
- Assist in maintaining inventory of expendable supplies (thread, notions, hardware, fasteners, adhesives).
Required Qualifications
- Significant knowledge of fashion, costume history, period, and style.
- Knowledge of curatorial techniques: cataloging, record‑keeping.
- Knowledge of research techniques.
- Knowledge of preservation and storage techniques, especially for fabrics and soft goods.
- Knowledge of, or ability to learn, tools specific to the costume shop and theater facility.
- Knowledge of standards of practice and safety in theater and related fields (concert, dance, opera, TV/film, etc.).
- Knowledge of costume construction and fabrication for theater, including patterning, cutting, fitting, draping, stitching, fabric treatment, painting, dyeing, millinery, crafts, leather work, armor, shoes, accessories, hair/wigs/makeup, and theatrical makeup applications (including special effects).
- Two years of college and three years of experience in theater production (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
