Job Objective

The Design Engineer will be responsible for developing technical drawings, engineering solutions, and production documentation for luxury retail fixtures, VM displays, custom furniture, signage, and experiential structures at SPACE/CRAFT's Tijuana, Mexico production facility.

The ideal candidate combines creativity with strong technical and manufacturing knowledge, ensuring that all designs are aesthetically impactful, structurally sound, cost-efficient, and production-friendly. This role requires close coordination with design, project management, procurement, and production teams to ensure smooth execution from concept through to manufacturing and installation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed technical drawings and production documentation across all assigned projects
  • Convert conceptual and creative designs into manufacturable, production-ready solutions
  • Prepare shop drawings, fabrication drawings, BOQs, and material specifications
  • Coordinate with production teams including carpentry, metal, acrylic, painting, and assembly departments
  • Ensure designs are structurally feasible and optimized for manufacturing efficiency and cost
  • Support project managers and production teams during fabrication and installation stages
  • Conduct material and hardware selection based on design intent and budget requirements
  • Create 3D models, renderings, and technical presentations when required
  • Identify design improvements and cost optimization opportunities
  • Work closely with clients, VM teams, and designers to achieve luxury-quality outcomes
  • Ensure compliance with brand standards, technical requirements, and production capabilities
  • Assist in prototype development and testing
  • Maintain drawing revisions and technical documentation control

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Industrial Design, Architecture, or a related field preferred
  • 5 to 10+ years of experience in retail fixture design, visual merchandising production, custom fabrication, signage engineering, furniture manufacturing, or exhibition and event production
  • Strong technical understanding of manufacturing processes and materials
  • Proven experience preparing production and shop drawings
  • Experience working with premium retail or luxury brands preferred

Skills & Competencies

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, SketchUp, Rhino, Fusion 360, or similar design software
  • Strong knowledge of woodwork, metal fabrication, acrylic fabrication, lighting integration, hardware systems, and finishing materials
  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications and architectural drawings
  • Strong problem-solving and engineering skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and a luxury-quality mindset
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects within a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Strong communication and coordination skills across design, production, and project management teams
