Express Reporter, Western Jobs in Vancouver, Canada at The-New-York-Times
The Express Desk of The New York Times has an opening for a full-time general assignment reporter in Western Canada who can deliver on major breaking news stories, as well as trending stories and features that will delight readers. This sprawling, dynamic region is fertile ground for a reporter with wide-ranging curiosity and a high news metabolism.
This position will be based in or around Vancouver or Calgary, putting the reporter in position to explore regional topics including politics, affordability, homelessness and extreme weather, as well as stories that appeal to a broad Canadian and U.S. audience. They will also contribute to our growing coverage of Canada as a whole, including stories that illuminate daily life and explore its relations with the United States.
They will work night or weekend shifts as news demands, with the expectation of developing, reporting and writing multiple stories per week or otherwise contributing to major reporting efforts across the newsroom, including live coverage.
This role will suit someone who has a deep knowledge of Calgary or Vancouver, can build relationships across departments and time zones and is a nimble self-starter who can tackle many topics.
- Report on major breaking news stories and collaborate with colleagues in different departments and time zones to ensure seamless coverage
- Follow events and trends to identify news and feature stories and broader areas worthy of coverage in Western Canada
- Experiment with storytelling and new formats
- Stay updated on audience strategies to reach new readers across platforms
- 5+ years’ experience at a journalism or media company, preferably in Canada
- Deep knowledge of and sources in Vancouver or Calgary, and the ability to develop new ones
- Professional experience reporting on major breaking news, preferably for a major national or global news organization
- The ability to work fast on deadline, handle evolving storylines and write about new topics quickly and ,authoritatively while adhering to The New York Times’s standards
- Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
- The role will suit someone who is a quick study and versatile. Ideal candidates have an established track record of news reporting, writing clearly and with style, and with a grasp of New York Times style guidelines.
- Demonstrated creativity in identifying and developing news features with a strong appeal to digital readers
- Familiar with a variety of story forms, including insightful live updates, takeaways that summarize complex events, explainers off the news, tick-tocks, timelines and more
- A reader-focused outlook that seeks to serve the interests of curious digital audiences
- An interest in driving the evolution of news coverage in the digital age, imagining new ways to tell stories and solving problems collaboratively
- Fluency in at least one non-English language
The annual base pay range for this role is between: CAD 85,000.
