Material Science Specialist (AI Training) – Remote Contract

About The Role

What if your deep expertise in semiconductor materials or molecular modeling could directly shape how AI reasons through the hardest problems in materials science? We're looking for Materials Science specialists — Masters and PhD level — to help train and evaluate cutting-edge AI models, ensuring they can think, reason, and problem-solve at a genuinely expert level.

This is a fully remote, flexible contract role built for researchers and domain experts who want to put their knowledge to work beyond the lab — on their own schedule, without leaving their field behind.

  • Organization: Alignerr
  • Type: Hourly Contract
  • Location: Remote
  • Commitment: 10–40 hours/week

What You'll Do

  • Develop, solve, and critically review advanced materials science problems with real-world scientific relevance
  • Apply your expertise in semiconductor materials, molecular modeling, or related subfields to craft complex, rigorous problem sets
  • Evaluate AI-generated scientific reasoning for accuracy, depth, and technical soundness
  • Collaborate asynchronously with AI researchers and fellow domain experts to push the boundaries of AI reasoning in your field
  • Ensure scientific rigor, clarity, and intellectual depth across all deliverables
  • Training and onboarding support will be provided — no prior AI experience needed

Who You Are

  • Hold a Master's or PhD in Materials Science or a closely related discipline
  • Strong expertise in semiconductor materials, molecular modeling, or adjacent research areas
  • Comfortable coding in Python or MATLAB — whether from research, coursework, or projects
  • Exceptionally clear written communicator with a sharp eye for scientific accuracy and detail
  • Self-directed and dependable when working independently in an asynchronous environment
  • Based in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, or New Zealand

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience with data annotation, evaluation systems, or AI model review
  • Background in computational materials science, density functional theory, or related modeling methodologies
  • Experience reviewing or writing scientific literature at a high level
  • Familiarity with AI tools or technical evaluation workflows

Why Join Us

  • Work on genuinely frontier AI projects alongside world-leading research labs
  • Fully remote and flexible — set your own hours and work from anywhere
  • Freelance autonomy with the structure of meaningful, intellectually stimulating work
  • Apply your graduate-level expertise in a high-impact, high-visibility role outside traditional academia or industry
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new AI projects launch
