Core Responsibilities
- Self-Perform Management: Directly supervise internal field superintendents, craft labor, and equipment operators rather than relying completely on sub-contractors.
- Project Lifecycle Execution: Own the full scope of multi-megawatt (e.g., 50MW – 100MW+) utility solar projects, including site civil works, pile driving, racking, modules, and medium/high-voltage electrical scopes.
- Budgeting & Cost Control: Prepare and manage rigorous baseline construction budgets, track labor productivity, approve material procurement, and oversee forecasting.
- Scheduling & Tracking: Develop and maintain detailed project schedules using Microsoft Project or Primavera P6 to ensure milestones are hit.
- Safety & Compliance: Enforce Site-Specific Safety Plans (SSCP) and ensure full compliance with OSHA regulations, environmental permitting, and Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) standards.
- Stakeholder Coordination: Serve as the primary liaison between internal construction teams, the client (owner), local Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), and utility companies for project interconnection.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: Typically 5 to 10+ years of progressive construction project management experience, with a heavy focus on utility-scale renewable energy (solar, wind, or BESS).
- Self-Perform Expertise: Demonstrated track record of directly managing own-company craft labor and heavy civil construction.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or applicable experience in lieu of degree.
- Certifications: PMP, NABCEP, or OSHA 30-Hour certifications are highly preferred.
- Travel: Ability to travel extensively (often 50% to 75%) to remote job sites across the country, sometimes living on-site or utilizing per diem during active construction. [1, 2]
Key Skills
- Strong understanding of civil sitework, foundation pile installation, tracker systems, and DC/AC electrical components.
- Ability to read and interpret multi-trade construction drawings, plan sets, and electrical specifications.
- Expertise in managing change orders, Request for Information (RFIs), and submittals.
- Excellent conflict resolution, leadership, and proactive problem-solving abilities on active, dynamic construction sites.
