Role Description The Real-Time Hair Artist will be responsible for creating, optimizing, and maintaining high-quality real-time hair assets for characters across games, cinematics, and other interactive media. Day-to-day tasks include sculpting and grooming hair in 3D tools, building real-time hair systems in game engines, and collaborating closely with character artists, technical artists, and animators to ensure assets meet visual and performance requirements. The role involves iterating on feedback, refining hair shading and physics, and troubleshooting technical issues related to hair rendering and simulation. This is a full-time role and is fully remote, requiring effective communication and collaboration within a distributed team environment.
Qualifications
- Hair and character art skills, including experience with real-time hair grooming, strand and card-based workflows, and understanding of anatomy and silhouette.
- Proficiency in 3D content creation tools such as Maya, Blender, ZBrush, or similar software used for character and hair asset creation.
- Experience working in real-time engines (e.g., Unreal Engine, Unity) with knowledge of hair shaders, LODs, and performance optimization for real-time rendering.
- Strong understanding of PBR workflows, texturing, and material setup using tools like Substance 3D, Photoshop, or comparable applications.
- Ability to collaborate with technical art and animation teams, including basic understanding of rigging, skinning, and hair-related simulation or physics.
- Attention to detail, strong artistic eye, and the ability to interpret and implement art direction consistently across assets.
- Effective communication skills, reliability in a remote environment, and comfort working with feedback and iterative review cycles.
- Relevant professional experience in game, VFX, or cinematic production; a strong portfolio showcasing real-time hair work is required.
- Preferred: Experience with UE5-specific tools, grooming plugins, or proprietary hair systems; familiarity with version control and collaborative production pipelines.
