Our client, a NYC based non profit organization, is looking for a Scientific Copywriter to support with a 3 month project starting as soon as identified.
*Must have Horticulture experience and writing samples to show*
The Scientific Copywriter will be working primarily remotely for approximately 20 hours/week. However, it is preferred that you are able to meet with the team onsite occasionally. Onsite meetings will be determined based on your availability and when works best for the client.
As the Scientific Copywriter, you will be supporting the team to develop a new plant database launching as part of its redesigned website in January 2027. The Scientific Copywriter will be transforming HORTICULTURE content into clear, engaging, and accurate web copy for a broad public audience.
The Scientific Copywriter will be responsible for:
– researching, drafting, and editing concise plant description for about 175 species, highlighting attributes such as seasonal interest, ecological value, and resilience in urban growing conditions
– translating complex horticultural and ecological concepts into accessible, engaging language
– copyediting and expanding on existing content which will be provided by the Horticulture team
– verifying and organizing plant data in Airtable preparing it for CMS integration
– selecting, cropping, and uploading plant photography; connecting media assets between MediaValet and Airtable
– writing clear, descriptive alt text for images to support accessibility
REQUIREMENTS:
– strong background in science writing, ideally with experience in horticulture, ecology, or gardening topics
– excellent copyediting skills and ability to turn rough drafts into polished content
– strong research skills and ability to synthesize information from multiple credible sources
– ability to manage and organize content efficiently, with attention to detail
– basic image editing skills (cropping, uploading)
– familiarity with CMS platforms such as WordPress or Craft CMS
– experience working with data asset management systems (e.g., Airtable, MediaValet)
In this position, you may have access to client or customer systems, confidential and/or proprietary information or data. This position is onsite and requires you to work closely with other individuals in a collaborative team environment.
