Executive Editor – Illustrated Books Jobs in Bulgaria at Ancient Remedies
Title: Executive Editor – Illustrated Books
Company: Ancient Remedies
Location: Bulgaria
We are a fast-growing D2C brand in the health and wellness space. We sell premium hardcover books to a large and loyal customer base — primarily women aged 50 and older — and we are expanding into new conditions and product formats. Our products have reached over a million homes worldwide. This role owns the voice of the entire product line — defining how our books sound, building the editorial workflow that keeps quality high at scale, and ensuring every page earns the reader’s trust. You are the person we trust with the prose so the founder no longer has to read every spread.
Why this role exists now:
We have a strong product team producing high-quality health content that customers love. But as we scale from one flagship title to a full product line across multiple conditions and formats, we need dedicated editorial leadership — a consistent voice, a repeatable workflow, and the kind of prose craft that turns a good book into one people recommend to their friends.
What You Will Own:
- Editorial voice and standards across the product line — you define how our books sound. You write the voice guide, the style sheet, the headnote rotation rules. Every writer and contractor calibrates against your standard.
- Final editorial sign-off on every book — you do not write everything yourself, but nothing ships without your hand on it. Introductions, recipe headnotes, section openers, glossary, back matter. You read finished spreads end-to-end and catch the things no one else catches.
- The editorial workflow — writer drafts, medical reviewer fact-checks, you polish, designer lays out, you proof before print. Layout collisions, repeated content, and voice drift die under your watch.
- Voice consistency across formats — as we expand into new conditions, digital companions, and new product lines, every product feels like it belongs to the same family. New writers learn the voice from you.
- Development of in-house writers — we have strong content talent already. You mentor, edit honestly, and turn promising writers into senior writers who can carry voice on their own.
- Collaboration with design — you sit in the middle of writing and layout. You push back when the design fights the prose. You push back on writers when the structure doesn’t earn the page.
You Are the Right Fit If:
- You have edited illustrated reference books, cookbooks, or wellness titles at a major publisher — DK, Ten Speed, Phaidon, Chronicle, Workman, or similar.
- You have 8+ years in book publishing, not just content or copywriting.
- You have personally edited a book that sold 100K+ copies. Ideally one that became a franchise — multiple editions, spin-offs, format extensions. You know what it takes to build a product line, not just one title.
- You can take dense, evidence-based health content and turn it into prose that is warm, clear, and inviting — without diluting the science.
- You have worked with art directors and designers. You don’t see writing and layout as separate disciplines — you see them as one product.
- You build systems, not just outputs. You write the voice guide so other people can apply it. You build the workflow so quality holds when you’re not in the room.
- You are comfortable with AI tools and eager to push them further. We are an AI-forward company and expect senior team members to leverage these tools while raising the quality bar.
- You are direct, opinionated, and self-directed. You do not wait to be told what good looks like — you already know, and you push the team toward it.
Nice to Have:
- Experience editing for an older demographic (50+) — you understand the readability, warmth, and trust signals that matter to this audience.
- Experience with content for the natural health or holistic wellness space — you can navigate scientific claims responsibly.
- Familiarity with print production — typography, layout flow, how copy fit affects pacing — so you can collaborate fluently with design.
- Experience editing across formats — print, digital guides, app copy — as we expand beyond books.
