Description

The English Department of Fordham University occasionally hires part‑time Non‑Tenure‑Track (NTT) faculty to teach literature courses. Based on scheduling needs as well as the qualifications and availability of the applicant, successful candidates may be offered one or two sections of our ENGL
2000 Texts and Contexts, a core course in introduction to literary studies and analysis. Occasionally we have openings to teach an advanced literature core elective, taught and offered to both English majors and the general student body as part of our core curriculum, and other upper‑division electives.

We seek instructors who can offer literature electives across a range of areas, who are committed to excellent writing‑intensive instruction, and who can foster engaging, equitable teaching and learning environments in consonance with Fordham’s Jesuit mission and its strategic plan to educate for racial justice. Texts and Contexts is required in our Eloquentia Perfecta (E.P.) writing‑intensive core sequence, and we view instruction in writing, rhetoric, and close textual analysis as an essential foundation of students’ experience in both literature courses and the undergraduate curriculum more broadly.

“Text and Contexts” is capped at 19 students, and students must complete 15 pages of polished writing with assignments that include scaffolded cycles of feedback and revision. Instructors must build writing and speaking into the fabric of their assignments and class meetings, and 20% of class time must be devoted to instruction in writing and speaking. Texts and Contexts sections have subtitles, and readings are grouped around a broad theme (for example, “New York City in Literature,” or “Medieval Monsters and Marvels”).

We are especially interested in hiring instructors who can design engaging Texts & Context courses that meet department requirements, draw student enrollment, and attract students to the value of the English major and minor degrees; we therefore encourage you to accent these matters in your application materials. Occasionally we have advanced literature core electives available that tend to be 35 students;

most literature electives are 35 students and meet twice a week.

NTT faculty may be offered courses at either campus depending on scheduling needs.

  • Minimum of one year of experience teaching literary or cultural studies at the college or university level.
