How To Apply:

Take-Home Assignment: Build a BI Dashboarding Tool

Duration: 1 week

The brief:

Every BI tool – Power BI, Looker, Qlik, Metabase, Tableau – makes a compromise between simplicity and power. Study how the leading tools handle this tension, then build a focused dashboarding tool that takes a clear position on it. Your tool is for a business user with no technical background – someone who knows what question they want answered but not how to model data to get there. You may limit your study to Looker and Power BI (or another business-user-facing tool).

The hard part is deciding what to expose and what to hide, which chart types earn their place, how filtering and customization work without leaking technical concepts, and where an agentic / natural-language layer replaces manual configuration. We want to see the judgment behind those calls.

What the tool must do:

At minimum, a user must be able to add datasets, build charts, add filters, and add calculated fields. How you implement each is your decision – the scope you choose is the test.

What we most want to see is how you prioritize. You can't build everything in a week, so within and across these four features, what do you build first, what do you simplify, and what do you cut? Tell us why.

A note on scope:

We are not asking you to rebuild Looker or Power BI. We want evidence that you can reason about a user, make sharp design decisions, and ship something polished – even if that's a small, well-chosen subset done exceptionally well.

What to deliver:

  1. Working prototype – a published, interactive app accessible via URL. Build it with AI tools; that's expected (we recommend Lovable).
  2. Brief write-up — your UX insights from studying existing tools, what you chose to build and why, and what you deliberately left out.

What we're evaluating:

Prioritization: Given a week, did you make smart calls about what to build, simplify, and cut — and can you justify them?

Abstraction: How well is complexity hidden without removing power?

Visual craft: Does the interface feel intentional, clean, and appropriate for the user?

AI fluency: Did you direct AI tools well to move faster and produce better output?

Constraints:

  • Must be published and accessible via a URL.
  • Built for a business user, not an analyst.
  • Using AI tools is expected. We're not testing whether you can build without them — we're evaluating whether you can direct them well, judge what they produce, and move faster because of them.
