About the Role

We are seeking a proactive and experienced Safety Officer to oversee and promote safety across fleet, marine, and shore-based operations. The role is site based and the successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring full compliance with international maritime regulations, company policies, and QHSE management systems, while fostering a strong and positive safety culture throughout the organisation. The Safety Officer will lead safety inspections, audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations, ensuring hazards are identified, controlled, and mitigated effectively. The role plays a critical part in emergency preparedness, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement, working closely with vessel crews, shore management, and external stakeholders to maintain the highest standards of safety and operational integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the Marine Safety & QHSE Management System.
  • Ensure compliance with SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM Code, STCW, and QHSE standards.
  • Conduct vessel audits, safety inspections, and emergency drills.
  • Perform risk assessments and hazard analyses; recommend mitigation actions.
  • Implement safety procedures to prevent accidents, injuries, and illnesses.
  • Oversee emergency preparedness, fire safety, lifesaving appliances, and pollution prevention measures.
  • Lead investigations of incidents and near-misses; identify root causes and define corrective/preventive actions.
  • Prepare incident reports in line with regulatory and company requirements.
  • Deliver safety and QHSE training for crew and shore personnel.
  • Promote safety awareness, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Support environmental compliance and implementation of environmental management plans.
  • Maintain quality assurance processes for safe vessel operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health & safety or related field.
  • Sea-faring experience or marine operations background.
  • Certifications such as NEBOSH, OSHA, IOSH (marine specialization preferred).
  • Experience with Safety Management Systems (SMS) and ISO 9001/14001/45001.
  • Strong understanding of emergency response procedures and risk management.
  • Ability to analyse safety data and present findings clearly.

Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM, STCW, and marine safety practices.
  • Proficiency in risk assessment, incident investigation, and corrective actions.
  • Detail-oriented with strong documentation and reporting skills.
  • Leadership, communication, and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to promote a positive safety culture.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with Safety Management Systems (SMS) and ISO 9001/14001/45001.
  • Certifications such as NEBOSH, OSHA, IOSH (marine specialization preferred).
