Orange Media Network – PRISM Assistant Editor Jobs in Corvallis, USA at Oregon State University

Position: Orange Media Network – PRISM Assistant Editor 2026-2027

This recruitment will be used to fill one part‑time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) PRISM Assistant Editor for the Orange Media Network at Oregon State University (OSU). The PRISM Assistant Editor collaborates with the editor‑in‑chief of Prism and produces student‑generated content for the print journal, its website, and social media channels.

Students in this role develop essential skills—communication, critical thinking, and professionalism—for future employment.

Employment Dates and Pay

  • Full Start: Sept. 8, 2026 to June 15, 2027
  • Pay Rate: 10 hours per week, $652 per month

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the creation of an annual art and literary journal
  • Maintain an active website and social media presence for Prism on all platforms
  • Regularly update online content with stories, photos, or interactive features
  • Ensure online content is unique, engaging, and enhances the experience for readers
  • Ensure staff volunteers and review committee are well‑versed in the best practices of critiquing art and literature and maintain a professional environment when evaluating submissions
  • Able to fairly critique and evaluate submissions regardless of the submitter’s identity or relationship to the medium
  • Plan and hold weekly meetings to assign tasks and oversee other journal activity
  • Ensure that all articles have been copy edited in Associated Press (AP) style (as appropriate) with the aid of OMN copy editing staff before submitting the publication to a commercial printer. Printer proofs are provided to evaluate image quality only and not for checking details or proofreading
  • Assist Editor‑In‑Chief with creation and delegation of a weekly art, literary podcast to be posted on the Prism website. The creation of the podcast can be delegated to volunteers
  • Assist with solicitation of submissions for Prism and recruitment of volunteers, including class visits, tabling, and other methods
  • Ensure that the deadline for sending the properly prepared print files to the commercial printer is met
  • Help train volunteer staff members in print production and submission review

Communication

  • Respond to emails, messages, and phone calls the same day, professionally representing OMN
  • Notify adviser immediately should any ethical, legal, personnel, or controversial problems occur

Leadership

  • Hold and post regular office hours each week for Orange Media Network, at least half of which should be during regular business hours (8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday). Hours may vary during different stages of the term
  • Follow all OMN policies and procedures and hold all staff and volunteers to them as well
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student:
      Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home‑schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post‑baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term

* International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full‑time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Required Qualifications

  • Is knowledgeable of or willing to learn In Design
  • Is knowledgeable in fact‑checking strategies
  • Is knowledgeable of the SPJ Code of Ethics
  • Is a strong writer, communicator, and comfortable with public speaking
  • Is experienced with coaching and with giving and receiving feedback
  • Able to remain professional and calm when working with difficult individuals and situations
  • Is knowledgeable and experienced in building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders and partners
  • Served as a member of paid OMN staff for at least 6 months – or – as a volunteer OMN staff for at least 12 months or equivalent

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

  • Had been a paid member of staff of the cohort for at least one term
  • Had prior attendance and participation in OMN Training Camp
